Home for the Holidays – Designed Just in Time

Clients hire a designer for design guidance. They are also expecting a level of good taste, design solutions, ideas they haven’t considered yet and “the” element of surprise.

decorated for the holidays

Usually upon meeting the client, any good designer understands their client’s aesthetic and how they live. Within the initial consultation, the client’s level of style will be determined and their design comfort zone. It’s the designer’s job to provide the design, implementation and make it real. It is also the designer’s job to discover how far the client will go outside of the box. This is vital to a healthy design business and happy clients. If a designer applies a safe mentality to every project they will risk not producing exceptional projects in the future.

Take Risks

Provide options slightly outside of the client’s comfort zone. Invite them to play a bit. In order for your client to consider something new and unique that will bring a fresh look to their space you will have to sell your idea. Consider taking a risk as long as it’s not crazy and risk losing client’s credibility. Also, think things through – don’t make suggestions you aren’t completely confident will make you the star of the show.

Deliver

If you cannot deliver your vision you will not receive repeat business. How you finish is how the client will remember you. Be careful with promises – be sure you can deliver the work and complete the entire project in time.

Don’t ever let them see you sweat

The client hired you for your expertise so if you show uncertainty they will quickly lose confidence in your abilities. Keep calm at all times and use your time wisely. Plan ahead your project stages and stick to a timeline. Also, use vendors and trades you worked with before and know are reliable to deliver excellent work. Some projects will be stressful but the end result sings and if your clients are happy, they will sing your praises.

And this will make your business thrive. You will be remembered not only for your great sense of style but also the ability to pull everything off on time.

A Designer’s Ability to Make Your Vision a Reality

getty-3218-174308282It can be very difficult for anyone to accurately describe or determine exactly what they want in a home design. Designers are skilled in figuring out exactly what you need by speaking to you about your needs and your design preferences. Designing a home to fit your personality isn’t always an easy or straightforward process. However, when working with a designer who has the ability to take your own ideas and add their professional input the end result will amaze you.

There are many advantages to using a designer rather than trying to figure everything out yourself. Designers will be aware of the cheapest locations to buy the materials that you need, so that you can stay within your budget. A designer will also be aware of the most current design trends, and will know how to take those trends and incorporate your own personality into the mix. Having a current design is an excellent way to increase your home’s value. Designers will also be able to point out any potential flaws in your design that might make it a little difficult to complete or be impractical for daily life.

Design Ideas for Small Spaces

getty-3218-157787482When it comes time to design your apartment, you can feel limited if you are restricted in your space. Take advantage of a small space by creating an illusion using smart design techniques. Here are some basic design ideas for small spaces that most anyone can apply to their personal esthetic.

Let in the light. A dark space swallows itself, while a well lit room will come alive and appear to be much larger. Use natural lighting, if possible, or opt for strategically positioned lamps and overhead lights. Follow the same rule for a color scheme by choosing paint and fabric colors that are light for an airy appearance. Additionally, you should keep with a solid color scheme of a single shade. Add a pop of interest in an oversized printed throw pillow or with wall art, but keep the focus to one decorative touch.

Here at Environments Design Group in the Westlake Village area we work with many clients who are searching for design ideas for all types of spaces. Contact the professionals at Environments Design Group for more information or to schedule a consultation regarding ideas in interior design.

What Designers Really Do

getty-3218-174438113Designing homes is as much an art as it is a science, and a professional home designer needs to balance many aspects of design at once. Home designers need to consider the lighting of a room, the colors and the overall atmosphere while working within a budget and connecting to the newest and most popular design trends. Designers need to be aware of what is going on in the design industry constantly, not only on an artistic level but also on a technological level. Designers don’t just create beautiful homes they also need to create utilitarian homes that will be easy for a family to live in.

Simply designing a living room requires the designer to think about who will be using the space, how the space will be used, the best ways to light the space and even whether the design will offer the right comfort and insulation for the occupants of the home. Designers are experts at creating spaces that are both pleasant to look at and enjoyable to be in, and this is why they are so critical during the home design process.

The Design Process: There’s More to it Than You Might Think

getty-3218-147036377Many homeowners might wonder why they should hire a designer to renovate their home. Some people assume that all a designer does is pick out furniture and a few paint colors. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Home design is an extremely involved and challenging field that requires a lot of work and a lot of study.

Why Hire a Designer?

Designers are aware of all of the recent developments in home design and how to achieve them. Not only does this make your home fashionable and trendy, it also increases the value of your home. Designers are also experts in determining whether certain designs will actually be functional, as well as attractive.

What Goes Into Designing a Home?

Designers will listen to the homeowner’s wishes and construct a design plan that fits their needs. Home designs include fixtures, furniture, flooring, paint, window coverings and even doors. The designer will think about how the homeowner lives and the improvements that will make life easier for them. They will also consider budget restrictions and can attempt to keep costs down.

Comparing Quartz, Granite, and Marble, Which Should You Use?

getty-3218-164103918Comparing granite, quartz and marble is important to your remodeling goals and objectives. Considering the question, “Which is best?” is an exercise in futility, as they all are superb.

Still, all three have pros and cons and you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each:

Granite

A hard substance, granite is natural. An igneous rock, it can come in numerous colors and designs. It is heat resistant, durable and discourages day-to-day scratches. It is also porous, susceptible to stains, and needs some periodic sealing. However professionally installed, it typically shows visible seams.

Marble

A metamorphic rock, marble is found in quarries and must be cut and polished. Elegant and beautiful, marble comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Also heat tolerant, its natural beauty, combined with its interesting grain, makes it a popular choice in kitchens and wherever durability is paramount.

It’s still not as durable as granite, but retains granite’s porous, stain ability. Using marble for countertops brings both maintenance and challenging repair requirements. Popular for floors, its hardness is a positive, while its repair and maintenance necessities concern homeowners.

Quartz

This material typically contains over 90 percent natural quartz, matched with polymer resins. It’s extremely hard and durable. It’s also heat resistant and unfriendly to stains. It comes in limited, but wonderful colors not present in nature. Made from natural stone, its resins enhance durability.

It’s not as impact resistant as granite, nor as impervious to high heat damage over time. Its colors are more limited than granite or marble. Quartz involves visible seams and higher cost.

How A Designer Can Bring Harmony and Balance

getty-3218-166407808A room that is properly decorated should have harmony and balance from the floor to the ceiling. Permanent features, like windows and doors, should be scaled to fit the room during the building phase. Choosing the right furniture will complement the room and help you balance out any features you can’t change.

An example of a design that lacked harmony and balance was for a prior customer’s master bedroom that included a floor to ceiling fireplace. The fireplace was crafted from stone and the room had French doors that were installed on both sides. On the opposing wall, a bed was installed with no head board and only two small night stands. This created a disconnection between the sides of the room.

To really bring the whole room together, a textured rug was added under the bed, along with a tall mercury glass lamp on each nightstand. Long mirrors were also hung on the wall behind them. Replacing the headboard with hanging drapes and a driftwood mirror completed the balance. When these new accessories were added, harmony ensued. Creating a space that is inviting requires proper lighting and organic features that balance out the weight of other visual components.
